Targeting a Zero Waste Moonshot

According to a World Bank report, global waste is expected to increase by 70% by 2050. Plastics are especially problematic, if not collected and managed properly, they will contaminate and affect waterways and ecosystems for thousands of years. A million plastic bottles are consumed around the world every minute and is being driven by an urbanized culture.

Most plastic bottles used for soft drinks and water are made from polyethylene terephthalate (Pet), which is highly recyclable. But as their use soars across the globe, efforts to collect and recycle the bottles to keep them from polluting the oceans, are failing to keep up. Only 9% of plastic has ever been recycled, and today the recycling system is breaking down. In this moderated discussion major drink brand Coca-Cola -with their World Without Waste strategy-and Polymateria -The Tesla of plastic- together with Marc – UN SDG advocate – will explore how the recycling system can be transformed to contain, control and reuse throwaway plastics.
